Cheap users are expensive
The argument we made at our Amsterdam panel: buying tuned on cheap conversions buys churn. The fix is feeding billing, complaint and churn data back into acquisition.

On 30 September we were on a panel at the Global Carrier Billing & Mobile Payments Summit in Amsterdam.1 It followed up on the webinar we did with MCP Insight. This is the argument we made on stage.
Most subscription acquisition still runs on one signal: the conversion. A user converts, the pixel fires, the campaign counts a win. Buying tunes itself toward the cheapest conversion at the highest volume.
In carrier billing, revenue arrives later than the conversion. It arrives after the charge succeeds, after the complaint queue stays quiet, after the user renews in month 2.
The damage from bad sources shows up in reports the acquisition system never reads. Billing failures on the users a source delivered. Complaint spikes 2 weeks after a push. Cohorts that disappear before the second renewal.
And the campaign that caused all of it still looks great in the ads account. So it gets more budget.
What the funnel needs to see
Three data streams, fed back into buying.
Billing data. Did the charge go through, and does it keep going through? A source with strong conversion rates and weak renewal billing is selling you numbers.
Complaint data. Complaints cluster by source and creative long before churn shows up in revenue. They’re the earliest quality signal you have, and most funnels throw them away.
Churn data. Which cohorts stay past month 1 and month 3, by source, by market, by creative. This decides what a user was worth. So it should decide what you pay for the next one.
- Day 0ConversionThe pixel fires. Most buying reads this signal and nothing after it.
- At the chargeBilling dataDid the charge go through, and does it keep going through?
- Week 2Complaint dataComplaints cluster by source and creative.
- Month 1 to 3Churn dataWhich cohorts stay, by source, market and creative.
Feed those back and the buying changes on its own. Sources that sell churn get paused. Cohorts that renew justify higher bids. CPA rises in some lines, and the cost of a user who actually stays falls.
Paying cheap CPAs for maximum volume was the standard play for years. Today it burns money while your report says everything’s fine.

That was the panel: which data belongs in the funnel beyond the conversion, and how it changes the users you acquire and the media you buy. If you want to go through it on your own numbers, write to business@meshads.com.
